Comics are supposed to be funny. The thing about Lawrence and his date at the prom was not funny. It would have been funny if Lawrence was in drag in order to fool the chaperones.
Elizabeth did lose her glasses when her day camp went to the beach. This was a story arc that ran for a couple of weeks. Not like Michael meeting Arnie, Lorne, or Wesley D. Bates, characters you see in one or two strips then they vanish.
I had a granduncle who fought in the Second World War. He hid thirteen pairs of eyeglasses in his coat. There were no Lenscrafters in the war zone, so if he lost or ruined a pair of glasses during the fighting, he needed to pull out one of his replacements.
I wore contacts for 30 years. My sight was 20/200 in the right eye, and 20/400 in the left. After wearing contacts for 5 years or so, I went with monochrome contacts, so the right was corrected for near vision, the left for distance. 25 years later I had cataract surgery with lens replacement to the same specifications. No glasses needed now. The brain does all the heavy work. Most of the time I never notice, and only need reading glasses at night. For Elizabeth, contacts are really not that easy to use, and cost much the same as good glasses. And they might even get kids to wash their hands more often!
My sister always wanted me to get contacts so I’d “look better,” until she got some herself. Sorry – glasses have been part of my (offstage) self-image since 3rd Grade.
Elizabeth does not really want contacts. The moment she gets them Anthony will be all “You look so beautiful with your contacts” and then he will be all over her. Better to keep the glasses and avoid all that.

You lost your glasses at the beach right after you first got them.

Looks like she’s broken the frames.

I never got contact lenses because I was afraid of losing them. So I’ve always just worn glasses.

I got contact lenses in 1982 at age 16. Never went back to eye glasses aside from reading glasses when on the computer. No regrets !

it’s generally cheaper to get eye surgery than use contacts. It doesn’t take many years to pay back the cost in comparison.

See, if she was wearing contacts this would not have happened.

This is why I only wear Flexon glasses frames. I too am a klutz.

What happened to Elizabeth’s bathing suit bottoms in the third frame?

Teenage girls are only thinking about looks, peer pressure and boys. Get her the contacts. Its not like they cant afford it.

Thought she lost her glasses on the day camp bus shortly after she began wearing them.

Would that have been glass contacts or sofr lenses?

That crunch sound came when lenses were made of glass, before they switched to plastic.

I’m guessing Elizabeth waited until they were at the beach to ask for contacts, because she thought her mother wouldn’t say no in front of Dawn.

Elizabeth should know that you can’t swim in contacts either… unless you wear goggles over them, and I don’t see her opting for that!

Umm…are those glasses on Elizabeth’s face in the last panel?
