That horrible moment when you wake up in the middle of the night and find your sister and your dog are in the bed with you and you wish that your parents didn’t lock their bedroom door.
horror movies are destructive to the mind/soul, I refuse to watch them. The reason young people laugh is an attempt to avoid the bad impression, but it gets there anyway, as this strip shows. There can be tension and threat in a film without the need to adversely affect the audience. why give yourself bad dreams? You have to wonder at the source of the ideas portrayed (,even if it is “just” actors on a set). Movies, which is escapism makes you realise there’s places you don’t want to escape to, so why go there.
Yes, in the old movies, it was apparent that rubber and papier-mache props were used as “special effects”. But in today’s films, it’s all CGI, which can really appear scary—especially to small fry like April.
A lot of the older movies did not show the blood & gore of the more recent ones. They relied more on suspense to get the feeling across, which had its own manner of inducing fright and anxiety.
And to think they laugh when mom said those movies will give them nightmares… Well, WHO’S LAUGHING NOW!? Perhaps it’s that thing under your bed who is patiently waiting for you to close your eyes while licking its lips and drooling hungrily…
October is horror movie month for me. Once I wanted to watch one on TV and had to babysit my nephew and 2 nieces. It didn’t go well for Gremlins, the year before when this happened. So I made jokes like this thru the whole movie and they were laffing like all get out. No problems like the last panel or the previous year.
I never understood those who watched the horror movie genre. Why does anyone watch a flick whose main purpose is to scare the wits out of you? I suppose it must losing yourself in the film and then enjoying an adrenaline rush you get when you realize you’re actually not being chased by a chain saw wielding maniac?? I wonder if those who enjoy these films have trouble falling asleep at night?
LOL… I value many of those old horror movies. Especially the classic B&W films from the late 30’s and early 40’s. Plus, many of them were filmed and directed by some of Hollywood’s best Cinematographers and Directors.
The most often cited movie as the beginning of the “horror” category is Night of the Living Dead. There were scary movies before but Living Dead crossed many lines with explicit scenes and (spoiler) no happy ending. Half a century later it is mostly considered one of the crowd, but in its time it was unprecedented. Audiences used to leave monster movies with girl friends clinging to boy friends, both laughing. Audiences left Living Dead in shocked silence.
This reminds me of the time I had my kids watch the original Halloween around 2010. I remember seeing it in college and thought it was terrifying. Watching it with them 30+ years later and they are looking at me like, “This scared you?” And I have to admit they were right.
I can’t watch them either and I’m 67. It’s all because of watching The Wizard of Oz as a child. The flying monkeys absolutely terrified me! So guess which are my least favorite mammals ….
Remember seeing the original Halloween when i was in my teens. Scared the hell out of me, I was terrified to walk to my car, which was parked in a dark lot. Haven’t done scary movies since then. The nightly news is scary enough.

It’s nice that they allow Edgar to come to bed with them. Now, if Elly should happen to look in…
