A friend of ours did kind of the opposite to my husband & me at our wedding. He bought us a CD player, but knowing that we’re people of very simple tastes & would probably return it, he included the Broadway soundtrack of “Cats” – one of my favorites, as a reason to keep it. 37 years later that particular CD player is long gone…but I still have the CD.

There’s nobody here that knows what to do with one. Besides, I’d rather watch Jeopardy.

That’s a “white elephant”: a “gift” that becomes an onerous burden for the recipient.

The times, how they do change. In the old days of the comics, it would be the father who’d end up playing with the kid’s present (see: train sets).

An interesting reversal on a very old marketing ploy: John D. Rockefeller used to give away kerosene lanterns, Kodak used to give away cameras…

So Bill has to say AE, GameStation, and Costclub…but “Super Bowl,” he can get away with (see the 2/13/2023 strip)?
