Andy: You're going to bed now? Jason: I can't wait. Peter was telling me about this Gregor Samsa guy who wakes up one morning transformed into a giant dung beetle. I figure the sooner I go to sleep, the sooner something like that can happen to me! Peter: You're pulling me out of advanced english? Why? Andy: You know darn well why. Jason: Could you keep it down? Some of us are trying to have unsettling dreams!

Remember, we’re talking high school advanced English - they probably don’t care where the author is from (especially whenever this was originally drawn). They just read whatever is The Canon for that grade level.

In high school, junior or senior year, we read Kafka (translated to English)
It was an advanced English class. I also remember reading Moll Flanders, Faust, Crime and Punishment and Madame Bovary. Only 1 was an “English” novel.
The emphasis was on composition, characterization, and style.
Something must have clicked. I still have my school copies of most of those books.

RCMinor said, “Bedbug, not dung beetle, but maybe that was Peter going for a better effect.”
Towards the end, the charwoman refers to Gregor as an “old dung beetle.” This may be what Peter was referring to, or he may be going for that better effect to get Jason interested.

We always called it Literature class. Reading foreign novels in an “English” class would be annoying. English was the class where we learned grammar and composition.
