Do schools really give out “summer reading lists”? I never had one when I was in HS (late 60s.)

Having attended school in the 1990s to early 2000s, I recall no summer reading lists.

I’ve never had a summer reading list. I’ve only seen it in the comics used as a frequent gag like this.

Ha! I went to school with a guy named Warren Pearce. I wonder what ever happened to him?

My mom never liked books, so when summer time came I do not remember reading lists as would not help, as I never knew where the library was. Summer was spent no books. We live in a neighborhood with houses spread out. Summer time was boring for us yet we had to adjust. My mom felt books was a waste of time. I did the opposite when I married and had kids. I did more then my own mom. That also included reading to at least one of my kids, son loved being read to, daughter loved doing other things. We lived in a smaller town so went to the library during summer time. Also had them attend VBS, and we go to the park to play.

We had summer reading lists back in the 60s. I remember once in 8th grade one of the books was “Soul on Ice” by Eldridge Cleaver. So someone was going to the store and asked me if I wanted them to pick it up. I said sure.I thought it was about hockey. Imagine my surprise. Interesting book.
