It stabilizes the tilt of the Earth’s axis so that our seasons aren’t severe. We could otherwise have 6 months of night and 6 months of day. The only way to survive the extremes would be to migrate constantly or hibernate for months at a time. It’s difficult to imagine a society that has to do those things.
