    As it happens, “Plato” (or Platon, as it would have been spelled and pronounced in 5th-century Athens) is a nickname. As a young man, he had unusually broad shoulders, and the term “platon” means wide or broad or spread-out in classical Greek. No connection at the time to eating utensils or kitchenware.
