They are literally letting the traffic push them along.
Once (just once!) I went shopping in the busiest time of the Christmas season. It was downtown Chicago, and the sidewalks were extremely crowded. I felt as if I could be carried along by the crowd without my feet touching the ground.
Given the increase in traffic in our mid Va city, I won’t be surprised to see a news report on just that topic.
Your gas mileage is doing really well too.

In L.A., with the traffic on the 405, it could actually happen this way … but at 70 MPH.
