Frazz by Jef Mallett for August 26, 2012
Transcript:
Caulfield: You know these guys' old ad campaign "just do it"? Frazz: Everybody does. Caulfield: That's what I wish I just did, is come up with that. Frazz: Oh, I don't think you do. The person who did was Gary Gilmore and condemn a murderer whose famous last words were to his executioners. Caulfield: That's where they got "just do it"? Frazz: Creepy but brilliant. Caulfield: I could make a comment about brilliantly avoiding paying royalties. Frazz: Don't do it.

I modified the slogan once to fit a manufacturing company I worked for. Just redo it

Actually Gary Gilmore’s last words were, “Let’s do it”.

Dude requested the firing squad instead of the other ways. Somebody snuck him in a shot of whiskey and then he said “Let’s do it!” Say what you want about him, he took his punishment like a man…..

Wasn’t that when the passengers tried to save Flight 93 over PA on 9/11?

Urban legend. “Just do it” was actually an often-repeated catchphrase of the Zen roshi of the Portland Zen Center.

I can find NO reference that says anything other than Gilmore’s last words were “Let’s do it”. An extremely rare mistake on Mr. Mallett’s part.

Sorry, but the swoosh logo is based on the checkmark. Checkmarks are very widely used in logos, so it wasn’t created in a vacuum.

There was an article about this in the New York Times a week ago: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/20/business/media/20adco.html

Frazz is not correct about the origination of the term. It goes back to Nancy Reagan and her comments about avoiding drugs. Ask how children could avoid getting involved in drugs, she said, “Just do it.” It became the slogan for the DARE program before Nike picked it up.

Good last words. My favorite are the ones by Alfred Spangler, “I commend my soul to any god that can find it.”

“Let’s do it.”
You gotta admire a guy who faces his executioners with a Cole Porter tune on his lips…
