Mrs. Olsen: You did your book report on a cookbook? Caulfield: "Pizza: Prince of Pies" by Arthur King. Mrs. Olsen: It's very short. Caulfield: Less is more. Just like with pizza toppings. Mrs. Olsen: I'm sure you mention where in the book it says that. Caulfield: Citations are the anchovies of writing.

I love anchovies.

One of my friends in high school had a job at a local (non-chain) pizza joint – whenever the rest of us showed up on his working night, he’d place an ‘anchovy bomb’ hidden under the myriad of sausage, pepperoni, mushrooms and extra cheese on his ‘special pizza’ for our crew. Whoever was the winner/loser (the one who got the anchovy) did not have to pay for their part of the meal that evening, picked up by the rest of the group. The owner was cool with it: the pizza was paid for, and the look of astonishment was worth the laughter in the pre-“America’s Funniest Home Videos” day. He’d even comp a soda for the winner/loser as compensation. I miss those days of extra sodas on a Saturday night.

When I ask for anchovies, a shudder goes through the area – and I don’t care. I love them on pizza and in caeser (sp?) salad.

THE CHEESE BOARD Collective Works, from a Berkeley co—op has a few amazing pizza recipes. Grilled garlicky potato toppings, you won’t settle for a pizza joint again.

Anchovies make great bait. So do worms. But why do they ruin pizzas with one and not the other?

Was that a veiled reference to King Arthur Flour?

@notsoastute * “I have yet to find someone who says they like anchovies.”
You must not have read the third post of the day. I hereby join magicwalnut in declaring my undying love for the estimable anchovy!unca jim over 11 years ago
If fed a pizza before 4PM, I’ll have an anchovy or three..After that time, I’ll have a Pepcid AC or two to survive the night. Proof positive I ain’t 18 no more.

Anyone who eats chain pizza deserves what they get..I’ll freely admit that I’m spoiled. I spent my formative years in south Brooklyn, where they know how to do real thin-crust pizza. I’m sure any Chicagoans here would feel the same way if someone raved about the “pizza” at Pizzeria Uno’s.

I’ve never had anchovies on a pizza, but I love adding a dab of anchovy paste to salad dressings or sauces. Adds that certain je ne sais quoi.

A pizza without anchovies is something you’d expect them to serve in Canada. Like fries and gravy.

And I love the nod to King Arthur Flour (tho’ I use my old pizza recipes, not one from a KAF cookbook)!

When I was in the Air Force one of my dormmates ordered a double-anchovie pizza to discourage moochers. He couldn’t eat more than two slices. I got the rest.

I buy the little fishes by the pound at a deli. Pizza and salads, there’s nothing better than some anchovies to round out the flavors.
