This must be a reference to the TV series, but since I’ve never watched it…….

Nah, it’s a reference to hunting season— deer hunting can be serious business here in the Midwest.

When they smash on your windshield, their smeared luminescence glows on the glass for a while….

Fireflies leave one feeling serene.

Driving in the Berkshires one summer night. We crested a hill to see what appeared to be ground fog shimmering in the valley below. When we arrived in the valley, we found ourselves driving through a cloud of fireflies.

What I wonder is who the first speaker is, who doesn’t immediately realize that the second speaker must be Caulfield.

Cute, but this must have been the easiest strip to draw, ever!

This strip is getting more and more esoteric every day.

Ever notice that they only flash when they are gliding UP? Always wondered about that.

I’m way past tense.

We called ’em “lightning bugs,” too. Never heard “fireflies” until well into school.

What TV series?

A “start”

This strip has nothing to do with a tv show and I don’t even know why anyone would think so when there are dozens of fireflies depicted in the strip! It’s June bug season that I hate. Those things are HUGE and when they hit they REALLY hurt (motorcycle).

Varnes: When eaten by a Mediterranean gecko, you can watch them keep flashing for a half minute..MrJimCos: Geckos don’t chew, and there was none on its mouth.

I think we just landed in redneck territory! If there’s an abundance of it local, they know how to eat it right!

Defunctdoormat, hey now, I love June Bugs. They’re big, a beautiful brown, they make a lot of noise, and they’ve never harmed anyone…Did you know they are the origine of the word “Humbug”? Bees, hornets and wasps also make a buzzing sound…Back in the day, some people just didn’t like the sound…So the phrase, “Don’t worry, it’s just a hum-bug” became popular. The meaning eventually was used to say something was trivial, and then was used as a way to disparage something….Anyway, I like June Bugs….

Hot muggy weather? Awe, Humbug! He said ironically…

Once when I was a little kid, I spent an entire night smacking fireflies with a baseball bat. I thought it was cool how they would glow on the way off the bat, like a spaceship getting shot down. But I killed so many, I barely saw any around our house the rest of the summer. I was really sad and ashamed when I realized what I had done, even as a child. My first lesson in widlife conservation.
