Here in Southern California it used to be Beach Boys music in the malls, It might still be, but now the only time I go to the mall is to go to the Apple Store.
Our good friend retired a couple of years ago from doing taxes. We knew to leave her strictly alone from about early March until she called us! I would’a thunk she’d get a day off right after the 15th but quite apparently my thunker isn’t as well informed as it might be.
Mother Nature has a nasty sense of humour. Right now in our part of the world she jumped over spring straight into early summer, taunting us as we stay in confinement.
I was a CPA and prepared taxes. Before retiring, I had a windowless office. Staring in January, I would work 10 – 12 hour days, almost non-stop, to the original tax filing due date. Most often this was not April 15th. Because of a newer, weird Federal holiday that fell around that time, the tax due date would be a day or two later.
For a long stretch of days, I would go in to work in the dark and go home in the dark. I would only see the sun if I went out for lunch and maybe on Sunday.
It’s Maine. It’s April 19th. We had a blizzard last week that broke half the trees in the state. Maybe in a month we’ll stop going below freezing at night. By July we should be able to plant our gardens.
An odd strip for the back half of April. I got my first deposit in February and the recent bump last week.
Sure, it’s a little different this year; but what’s with the reference to a sure sign of spring? THAT sure sign was a month or more ago if your not interested at all with weather … which is all over the place geographically.
Trying to do some planting that I have long wanted to do. Seeds say plant after no frost. Hhmm, had frost the last two mornings yet hitting highs of 75 – 79. Heat at night, a/c during day.
This is a great strip, I love the Sunday strip artwork. One thing though, that bear didn’t just come out of hibernation. A few years ago I saw a black bear near a rural dumpster in April, it was so skinny, at first I thought it was a German shepherd.
And in other parts of the country, Ma Nature has dumped large quantities of snow. Unfortunately, the kids in those areas can’t even take a snow day off school because they’re already out because of the virus.
Frazz18 hrs · Foiled again, or at least toyed with, by the mischievous gods in charge of timing for advance-submission workers. The coronavirus shutdowns, which were still not a thing when I drew this and launched it into the pipeline, have of course rendered moot the standard April 15 tax deadline. I’m not complaining if that’s all the explaining I have to do. I sure wouldn’t want to have to do the explaining the tax accountants have to do, especially when they have to do their explaining to people like me. Federal and state and local deadlines all meshed questionably before, and now they may have all extended their deadlines, if they extended their deadlines, differently, and I think somehow my 2nd quarter taxes are due before my 1st quarter taxes are. I’m not sure, and I think it was pretty obvious how unsure I was when it was explained. But as long as my accountant is sure, I’m good. The poor guy. He might not see the outside of his burrow for extra long this year.

Reminds me of a line from a Heinlein book (Time Enough for Love):
“Be wary of strong drink. It can make you shoot at tax collectors… and miss.”

I hope the CPA didn’t come out into the sun too close to that bear.

Tax CPAs have been busy for months. They start long before spring.
