Well behind the power curve here. I’m still working with tip and ring phone systems. What pray tell is Zoom other than a word to indicate that an object is moving very, very quickly?
Zoom only makes sense with a group, committee meeting, etc. Aunt Betsy would go better with a FaceTime chat.
This is taking a shot at ZOOM for some reason; or it’s Jef showing little understanding of the technology. He doesn’t often let himself be shown in a dim light.
I’m really enjoying the lack of scheduled meetings. Zoom seems to be made for those who need socialization and timed events. It’s like a telephone conference except that people can see you from at least the chest up and you need to figure out the most flattering camera angle. Anyone not currently talking mutes their microphone or it’s a bunch of echoes, only how many remember, are willing, or know how? Author events on You Tube or Facebook can be viewed live or at your leisure and you only interact through comments and questions and then addressed by the author. Guess which one I prefer? And I could be zooming and drinking coffee right now with my church ladies instead of dropping in and out to read comics.
I saw a Saturday Night Live skit where one of the characters used Snap Camera for a video (I’ve heard it works on Zoom). I’ve yet to try it, but I bet it would make the whole Zoom encounter with Aunt Betsy a lot more interesting.
… and ALL† (good) writers are readers. So the obvious thing is to use the chat feature, (w)right?
A good long time ago getting my allowance was conditioned on two things: A weekly chore and sending two letters to a relative (any of uncles, aunts, grandparents or, once she had moved to college, my oldest sister. When I went to college, that requirement dropped to “No less than one letter home per week, though if it’s an emergency, a postcard is okay (only one emergency per month, please)”. I’m quite sure that nobody (I know) these days requires such dreary effort from their kids. Who very likely have never learned to write so it’s readable in any case. Pity.
† We ALL know that ALL universal statements have exceptions.
Jef Mallett’s Blog Posts:Frazz15 hrs · “A profound grasp of the obvious.” That’s what a professor, and eventual close friend, of mine would write on some students’ papers. He didn’t mean it as a compliment. What he didn’t seem to realize was that a grasp of the obvious, properly timed, could be a bit of genius. Maybe he didn’t realize it. Maybe he realized it but found it interfered with the message he was trying to get across. Or there’s the very real possibility he’d have read this particular piece and adorned it with the very same words.

If she’s a writer she has much to say, depending on her area of interest. He might think that’s more fun in person than online.
