There are many books in the library. Get in the habit of reading for fun and you can always find something to do. When I was a kid (many years ago) I was at the library so often that the librarians knew my by sight. I started reading adult books several years before I was at what they considered the “proper age”. I had to get permission from the head librarian. After a while she approved my choices without any problems.
I was a voracious reader, but could never get through the assigned summer reading, simply BECAUSE it was required. I’d read everything else. But not what they tried to make me read.
One side effect of covid self-quarantine and excessive heat is that there are a number of sites that offer ebook reproductions of favorite authors that range through all of history. Everything from ancient lands to English dramas and colonial America, through the private eye and western story upsurge to modern political drama, spies, and techno thrillers. Same for tv movies. So, while I can’t get out and work the garden and do repairs, I can exercise my mind and tamp down the other side effect, i.e., the gloom and depression that threaten daily.
And the young lady is correct. Once one begins a reading marathon, it becomes difficult to stop just because one has read through the list. Maybe she could maintain her momentum by writing early book reports on her 3 favorite reads from the list. She might find that more fun.
I never had summer reading as a child, in the sense I was told I had to read something. I don’t like to read. Although I did. It was more like coming here and reading comments, not an entire book I had to do a report on and can’t remember anything about to this day.
Here in Michigan, a place familiar to you, Jef, school started last week and it seems to get earlier and earlier each you. You should note that coincides with an extra week of football playoffs, which means high schoolers will have TWO games under their belt and more pressure to not miss practices which, in effect, stifles that final weekend getaway known as Labor Day. Does studying a playbook count as reading?

I was half expecting a “running Ron, never won” or similar gag.

Where are the Districts that haven’t been in some form of “open” for the past week?
Exclude the ones that haven’t been able to define “open”.

I love ink-on-paper books, but I got a Nook so I could carry around a larger portion of my library. No more suitcase just for books when I travel!

I hope we can finally put the language of kids " being behind" After these last 2 years. I really hope we have learned that lesson.
