For us retired folks it is an extra day off! 366 vacation days this year instead of only 365 as normal! I plan to use that extra day well!

Time for calendar reform!

It means that March 1st and 29th won’t be on a Thursday also.

If the 1st and 29th were Fridays then there would be 5 of them, which is extremely beneficial for those that get paid every Friday, or about half the people that get paid every other Friday, as it would mean an extra paycheck that month. As it stands, they have to wait till March for that to happen.

Fun fact: a “leap day” is also called an intercalary day: an extra day inserted to adjust the calendar so that it lines up with the seasons properly. Before the months were made varying lengths, they were all the same length and so it was necessary to have even more intercalary days, and they’d happen every year — not just on leap years. And here’s the cool part: those intercalary days, being not normal calendar days, were always holidays. You planned your business around the set calendar, so if the government inserted some intercalary days, that was pretty much automatically a government holiday and a bank holiday rolled into one.

So I vote for all February 29s to be treated as weekends, regardless of what day of the week they actually fall on. ;-)

Caulfield is smarter than that. If the extra day was a Friday or Monday and considered a holiday, then you’d have a 3 day weekend. But having it ON the weekend doesn’t gain you anything.

I recall a proposal for a revised calendar which would have 12 months of exactly 30 days each. That would account for 360 of the 365. The remaining 5 would be called “intercalary” days and would take the place of the current New Year’s Eve festivities — 5 entire days of partying. In a leap year, 6!

Don’t ask too many questions. Leap year makes people jumpy.

It’s the girls’ birthday. We are going to make a 4 day weekend of it in Victoria. Empress Hotel here we come.
