“college tuition and fees have surged 1,120 percent since records began in 1978, four times faster than the increase in the consumer price index.” – BloombergBusiness 2012.We started college funds when our kids were born, paid into them faithfully, and it is still a stretch. To make it increasingly difficult to get an education marks a society that does not value an educated citizenry.

My parents helped when necessary, in spite of my not being an only child, but my college education was paid mostly by scholarships and loans..On the other hand, in many European countries the universities are financed by the government and education is free, at least through the bachelor level. I.e., public support for education doesn’t end with the 12th grade, so massive loans and private scholarships aren’t needed.
