Four blocks to one WaWa, six to another. Less than three miles to any of four major grocers and six or seven beer distributors. I just don’t enjoy walking, so I take my truck or car.. Sue me too.

The WW I pictures are intriguing, as always:

“Don’t Waste Bread!” With a large number of farmers in the military, and not enough women to take over their work, Britain had to import a lot of food. The U-boat blockade was highly effective, and by the time the US joined the war Britain was within six weeks of being starved out. The poster shows a merchant ship about to ram a surfaced U-boat; that actually happened, about a half-dozen times.

“Soldiers.” They’re German soldiers; it was common for German soldiers to hold a competition to find the tallest and shortest man in a unit. I suspect this picture comes from the first year of the war. The belt buckles are shiny and the boot leather doesn’t look black; in mid-1915 the Kaiser ordered buckles painted black and boots to be made with black leather. The tall man is wearing a private’s uniform; by their collars and hats, the other two men are unterofiziers, similar to a corporal or sergeant. I can’t figure out the patch on the one man’s chest. It’s too large for a medal ribbon. It appears to be black and white, the colors of Prussia, so this may mean he’s in a Prussian unit.

I live seven miles from the nearest community. I try to stay out of the car for six out of seven days. Having said that I love cross country road trips.

My guess is the ladder in Frank Page’s driveway was used to get a photo from above looking down at the comic strips. As a photographer I used a step ladder many times for just such a purpose.

Like JohnnyDiego up there, if I’m going anywhere, I’m driving. We live on 14 acres out in the country. It’s a tenth of a mile (a city block) just to get to the road to check the mail. It’s 5 miles to a gas station and 10 miles to anything else (well, there is a nice farm supplies store 7 miles away). At least I enjoy the exercise of walking out to the mailbox and back.

I didn’t realize how much time I spent in an automobile, until I retired, last year. I used to fill my tank two or three times a week. Now a tank of gas ( same car ) will last at least two weeks.I can honestly say, I don’t miss the commute and the aggravation of being stuck in traffic – particularly during Snow Bird Season.

Since we moved to a suburb of our state capital, everything we do is within a 13 mile radius (sometimes less) of where we live. What is interesting is that 13 miles was the distance to the next town from where we used to live. That was considered a major trip then. Now it is just an everyday occurance.

    Strange how life works.

Re Picasso’s woman: This is a well-known example of subliminal art. The upper half of her face is a penis. She is masturbating.

MiniBurgers: I confess to a secret weakness for White Castle and Krystal. It’s the grilled onions that make’em taste so yummy, and those soft, soft rolls.
