…my sister once came home with straight A’s on her report card…
…my Mum yelled at her …
..telling her never to come home home with straight A’s again…
…that there was more to life than studying…
…and my Mum was a nurse…
…graduated college…
….in highschool I had Mrs. Green for Literature Class…
…she gave us an assignment in poetry…
…said that there were no wrong answers in poetry…
…and that it was open to interpretation…
…so go for it…
… I took up the challenge…
…dismissed the easy answers…
…looked for deeper meaning not only about what the author said…
…but what was left unsaid…
…I started reading between the lines…
…and amazed myself by finding a clear, deeper meaning…
…I wrote happily…
…joyfully…
…when Mrs. Green walked around handing us back our papers she had given me a D. …
…publicly telling me as she handed it to me that that wasn’t what the poem was about at all…
…that what I wrote was nonsense…
…that next time I should take the assignment seriously…
…I failed that class because I realized she had nothing to teach me…
…she opened a door only to shut it in my face…
…wait…
…I’m still writing that way…
…well…
…that explains things perfectly…
