I had a close childhood friend who had schizophrenia. He ended up jumping off a highway overpass. No one would tell me at the time, because they knew it would crush me. As incredulous as it might seem, I was honestly not thinking of schizophrenia when I created today’s comic. I was just thinking about someone who had a physical and actual visitation from baby seahorses. Yes, they live in water. Yes, it is impossible. But FA doesn’t live in the same world as other comics, so I ‘ve given myself a self-issued permit to think this way. I could point to countless other strips of mine that follow the same “Dada” or surrealistic train of thought. I apologize to you deeply if I triggered this reaction in you. I tend to make fun of myself regularly and the world I see in my own head. I don’t target specific people (other than other comic strip characters or “celebrities”) and I would never consciously make fun of an illness that affects millions, including my decades-missed friend Dennis. (It’s hard for me to even mention his name.)
