Off leash Dog parks are just lawsuits waiting to happen.
We used to take our boys to the dog park but there was always one dog there that made me wary. Nice looking dog but I didn’t like how pushy it was with the other dogs, being quite dominant.
We skipped the park one week due to another obligation and boy, we are sure glad that we did!
That pushy dog ended up mauling a little terrier, injuring her quite badly and her owner sued the owner of the attacking dog for vet bills plus emotional damage.
In fairness, we all saw it coming and felt that this particular dog should have been banned from the park, or at the very least, the owner should be required to have it leashed.
Oh, and it was not some XL Bully dog that attacked the little terrier, it was a family friendly golden retriever.
The local gated dog park has a strict no-leash rule, so that any dogs that might be threatened can run away without being caught on a branch. I’ve never seen dogs fight there, but the managers take precautions. So when you see the Dog Family off leash on Sunday, they are in a Toronto dog park.
I would try taking my dog to a dog park if she didn’t already have many dogs nearby. We walk with them often, and a cat who comes outdoors on a leash who enjoys visits with my dog. I sometimes dog sit for a few dogs, too. I feel dogs need stimulation of many kinds, so I wouldn’t deprive her of the extra socialization. We do our therapy dog visits with a dwarf golden almost always, and sometimes other therapy dogs come in on the day we go, too. My dog is happy to see other dogs, but is non-reactive to them – no barking, threatening, or dominance issues. She’s a team player like most beagles.

Dogs can be pretty rough with cats they don’t know! Leaving Floof at home was definitely the right thing to do (and I’m glad she didn’t sneak out!).

The first time Achilles escaped, one day I heard from a neighbor that he beat on a dog to get a little food.
