Grandma Heckel is based on a sweet hearted landlady from the first apartment that I can remember. Mrs. Krinke knew how to persuade young children to do something using clever psychology, and I may put one of her ‘tricks’ in the strip!
I’ve had the “they’re too pretty to eat” line used on me! One of my former coworkers loved Halloween, so one year, I made some sugar cookies that I cut out with Halloween cookie cutters, and decorated them. It didn’t dawn on me until later that he probably couldn’t eat them for dietary reasons. I’m hoping he shared them with his elderly mother who lived with him. ☺️
