My dad grew up in the 1920s/early 30s on a farm. He told me that when he and his siblings went to bed on Christmas Eve, there was not a single sign of Christmas in the house. But when they got up Christmas morning, there was a fully decorated tree, around which was an elaborate winter scenery with running water simulating a stream, and much else (his father was good at woodworking, and designing and building things). My dad said his parents must have worked all night to put all that together.
I think there’s a lot to be said for that – waking up to a kind of wondrous scene appearing literally overnight (sort of like Dorothy suddenly landing in Oz) even if it’s not practical for the most part these days.
That’s how I feel right now, because we just got our fake Christmas tree set up yesterday, and we still need to decorate it, not to mention wrap up presents and put them under the tree.
I put up my fiber optic tree for the solstice…and Christmas. Will stay out until New Year’s Eve. Only lit at night when I’m home. The bulb gets very hot!
Some day, I’ll have to look into if it’s possible to upgrade it to an LED, which are less hot.

Speaking of tradition check out the pic of Tall Uncle Roy over the fireplace.
If you could see the whole pic his head is cut off because he is too tall to fit in the frame.
That was a joke on a 1983 Garfield Advent calendar I had as a little kid.

One of the rare few strips Garfield shows teamwork with Jon. Zany but heartwarming. Might be my favorite Christmas strip from Garfield!

It seems like Liz did all the work, plus cleaning up after Jon. And Jon takes the credit and pats himself on the back.

It just wouldn’t be Christmas without a last minute panic driven burst of shopping and decorating. Here’s hoping y’all get it out of the way Monday.

We finally got the tree & decorations up last week. Christmas sneaked up on us this year.
Gina thinks it was due to Thanksgiving falling so late in November.
