GA (May 16, 2004):
Corky: “Pops can’t stay by himself now that Mom is gone.”
Judy: “That’s right, Corky.”
Corky: “What are you going to do about it, Skeez?”
Skeezix: “You mean - what are WE going to do about it!”
Hey Corky, how about getting her side of the story? If you can shut up long enough that is! Can you at least let her finish a sentence instead of finishing it for her?
Sorry Gert, “looking for Mr. Walt” won’t cut it. The right thing for you to do was to gracefully leave the theatre with the old gent when your forged tickets were challenged. Everything that happened after that was your doing and grossly irresponsible. Even so, you coulda saved your bacon by using your cell to alert the family after you got turfed out without him. Or quietly explained things to that grumpy usher. But nooo… you had to sneak back in to look for …Walt? Haw… face it honey, you went in prowling for Bird backstage. Walt was the last person on your mind until after the show and after you visited Bird in his dressing room to see if you could line up a little celebrity nooky.
And that, friends, is “her side of the story.”

Of course if she’d done what she was supposed to, this whole silly escapade wouldn’t have happened. It would have been about everyday folks being just folks the way GA used to be, not about a bunch of toons doing one corny skit after another, which is what GA has turned into.
It is so very easy that all onlookers, with otherwise cool heads, judge someone in emotional stress. Yes, we all know what SHOULD have happened, but would any of us in those exact situations have reacted differently?
I have worked for a couple of hot bull headed Corky punks in my life, but not for long. They weren’t worth my health. I
I’m going along with Gweedo, they need to hit him over the head with a rolling pin, better yet a cast iron pan. Corky is more irresponsible than Gertie, afterall, he is never at his business except this one time. Where has he been all this time?
ocean17: This is a comic strip. Fiction. Pulled directly from the imagination of a cartoonist. Why in the world would you assume motives other than the ones stated by the creator of this character and this story line?
That would be like saying Atticus Finch defended that guy because it’s the PC thing to do or Hamlet dueling with his uncle because he had an Oedipus complex.
Gertie being canned could be a blessing for her. Creative people are never, ever happy toiling in conventional or corporate environments. Then she can chase Byrd, live happily ever after and then hopefully we will see a bit more of the good Professor Wallet Senior while he is still with us.
Clearly we all read the strip and the comments, that’s why we’re here. If we disagree with someone’s point or perspective, isn’t it fine to say so? Saying “if you don’t like the comments, don’t read them” is a real conversation stopper (and sometimes an internal contradiction). That’s too bad, because there’s alot to talk about. I think “shouting” someone down is a poor debating technique, even if done in text.
Freedom of speech issues notwithstanding, isn’t this discussion partly about etiquette? Is saying “lighten up” tantamount to saying “shut up”? The first seems to me like advice (even if unsought) to take another perspective, the second more simply rude. I didn’t think Roohey was saying shut up. Is thanking someone for “stating the obvious” very much different from calling him a name? Is either really polite or productive? Both seem like ad hominem attacks rather than reasoned points. Neither furthers the discussion, neither informs.
I’ve done a fair bit of everything I criticize here, but I do feel better when I’m able to disagree without using angry words. And to make a point without angry words coming back.

I think there was a whole lot of disagreement freely expressed by everyone involved, one after another, but that all of it could have been done with a higher level of decorum– given the obvious intelligence of the commentators! We could get deep into why the strip matters so much to us all if we choose our words with more care. Even Norman made some valid points, but they were too often overshadowed by name-calling, and sadly all he had to say has been erased because of that.
I’m sure Dypak will post later on tonight, Bob, as he usually does. By the way, I haven’t intended to speak for Roohey either, just to say how I read his comments. And, hey, nice talking with you!
I am guessing that Corky’s current “anger” is all an act and that Corky is setting Gertie up for Bird to make an unexpected appearance to make another marriage proposal. Everyone in the diner is “in” on what is coming next and the ONLY one who will be surprised when Bird “suddenly” appears will be Gertie! Corky is setting it all up so that Gertie will believe that she has an easy out when Bird pops the question again. Remember, the gang at the diner were Bird’s guests for the show. And Terri KNEW that Gertie was planning on doing a complete makeover in order to make it to the show. Which, at this point, seems kind of strange. Unless, of course, Terri just naturally presumed that Bird had sent complimentary tickets to Gertie and Walt and, therefore, never thought to mention to Gertie that the entire Diner gang would be going to the show because they had free tickets.

Roohey is like a complete newbie, he’s only been around since the beginning of October and has made like six comments. Unfortunetly he gets Bassman dumping all over him for one of them. I havent seen him around since. I wouldnt come back either if thats the way I was treated, first time out.
Think about how we sound sometimes. We’re either picking at the comic or picking at each other. GoComics is like a really bad playground sometimes. I used to try to keep up with things on SOTU but that bunch of whiners and crybabies is the worst.
Devonshade implies I’m some kind of policeman suck up. Not sure who he thinks I’m sucking up to. Certainly not Liam or anyone else lurking in the shadows out there. There’s quite a few other posters who I respect and I have to admit I care what they might think. But I’m not going to change what I think or what I say for any of that.
All I really want to do is enjoy the comics and have a few friends to share some laughs with. There are alot of great people around on here to do that with. A very few make it difficult. But that’s life. Sometimes it’s difficult for me to tolerate the bullies and punks who think they can speak any way they like to people and get away with it.
So to wind this up, Bassman, to be honest, yeah, what I thought what you said was out of line. Apparently it bothered you much more than I meant it to. So let me apologise. It’s not my job to police you or anyone else.
