It’s not an advertisement, it’s a request for donations to build the Army Museum. Thank you for your service, men and women of the US Army – past and present!
The coin featured today is a second option – and both yesterday’s coin and this one are offered as uncirculated and “proof set” silver or gold mintings.
Remember how old-time radio shows used to pitch adsin their stories? This strip is like that. Heck, this strip was around when radio started! So say my elders (Lord rest their happy souls).
They are “real money” in the strict sense of legal tender. Now, whether you would spend a coin of collector or precious metal value for the amount based on face value is up to you.
But if you have any old silver dollars on hand I’d be happy to give you a crisp $1 bell for each one.
The people who complain about this strip are like the people who booed the Iraq veteran at the recent Republican debate. Small minds make small statements.
These coins are in fact legal tender, and follow in an over a century long history in the United States of issuing special commemorative coins to raise money for monuments and special events, starting with the Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1892. In coin collecting terms “uncirculated” is a grading level just below “proof”. In this strip, Scanarelli has often promoted fund raising causes for veterans memorials starting with the World War II memorial. So if you regard this as a “promo” or “spam” well so be it – it’s a worthy cause. And for SM – try getting some facts before you make the sort of comments you make.
My 88 year old father who is a WWII Army Veteran, history buff, and supporter of museums will love getting this coin. It will look nice with the other military related coins I have given him thoughout the years.
I agree with those that say “thank you” to Jim for doing this. The character of Skeezix is an Army veteran, if you all remember. Jim supporting this national Army museum and helping them raise money is a way to support Soldiers. If you don’t like giving any money to the US Mint, don’t buy a coin – just donate to the Museum. I don’t mind the promo at all. In fact, I like it very much. Jim has done this before and it’s his prerogative to do it whenever he wants.
