The Emancipation Proclamation was issued in 1862, but only took effect on January 1, 1863. Or rather, it gradually took effect and was completed on June 19, 1865. Though the emancipation of US slaves was only completed with the final ratification of the 13th Amendment on December 6 of that year. (I love history…)
