@RolandGO is right. The red cap was introduced by the colorist. If you look at the Sundays, which are normally colored by the original artist, you will find that Mac’s cap is actually blue. In fact, if the Sundays were being re-run along with the dailies, we would have seen this cartoon just two weekends ago:

Yup hat should be same colour as Bucky’s eyes.

Because the guys who do the colouring do not know the correct one to use! Mac is supposed to be WHITE also, but that “white” I see is more like the “used snow” kinda white… heh heh…
