The official name is “State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations”, and, just to add to the confusion, the island itself is now called Aquidneck Island, with Newport and some other towns on it. Like NJ, it’s nicer than it looks from the highway. We go to the beaches there (from CT) to get surf, out of the lee of Long Island.
Actually, I grew up on a cove that could easily be called “Sewage Treatment Cove”, because of the Sewage Plant outflow by it and the Island of the same name as the cove.
Always thought it had something to do with Cecil Rhodes. In that case Sewage Treatment Island would be an improvement. Associating the current name to a treatment plant is an insult to sewage.Cecil was one of Hitler’s idols if that gives you a clue as to the type of monster he was.
