When I was a kid… the Trendy Thing was to swing so high that you could leap off and catch the chain-link fence that was usually part of the playground and near to the swings. Reports had it that kids might have skinned their hands or done worse damage to their hands.
But the only swing we had in my area… was near a tree. Kids would leap for branches. About one in ten could grasp a limb. And about one in ten of them – didn’t have the branch break. Kids got hurt. They got L-O-N-G Lectures on how stupid, idiotic, reckless… the whole stunt was. Those of us who stood on the sidelines got some of the same lecture. But we were busy giving the dare-devils the we-told-you-so look.
