I actually got a “delay” like that recently. I had called shortly before the end of the company’s “telephone hours” and was put in their telephone “queue”. When the end of the “open hours” passed, I wasn’t eventually served (a lot of companies serve those in queue before actually closing), and I wasn’t disconnected, but my projected waiting time in the “queue” kept getting longer.
I eventually realized that for each minute I remained on hold, the projected waiting time had increased by a minute. I’m sure that if I had not hung up, my “projected waiting time” after a 12-hour wait would have been more than 12 hours.
