    Don’t the Brits call them “trainers?” That probably sounds too much like learning. “Sneakers” would work better for him.

    I call any shoes like that sneakers, even though the young people today have elevated the description to “running shoes” or other names to sound cool. Welcome to my old-fogie world and take your sneakers off at the front door.

    Ah yes, another regional thing.Growing up in NW Indiana in the shadow of Chicago, we called them “gym shoes”.
