They tried a Pogo reboot back in the late 80’s. It was actually well done, but didn’t go over well. I think that people had too high expectations, partly because they mis-remembered how Kelly actually did his strip. Compared to what we see now in Doonesbury, Mallard Fillmore, and the like, Kelly’s political barbs were far more gentle. Also, I read one letter complaining that an extended Sunday continuity was a spoof on Batman instead of a scathing indictment of the G.H.W. Bush administration, but the letter writer had forgotten (or never knew) that the Sunday Pogos were ALWAYS just about having a laugh; Sundays were commentary-free.

The guy who wrote the reboot, Larry Doyle, has gone on to write for the New Yorker and The Simpsons, and wrote the very popular novel that became the very unpopular movie “I Love You, Beth Cooper.” The artist, Neal Sternecky, is working at Disney, last I heard. It’s too bad; his style was MARVELOUS on the comics page, even when he wasn’t following Kelly. (I’ve been following these guys since college; they did a strip in the Daily Illini which was the best student-produced strip I’ve ever seen.)
