Actually, Heart, it’s more of a “space Western,” with a lot of Buddhist/Hindu philosophy thrown in to make it seem more mystical. But point taken.

Come on, who ever heard of a soap opera where the Bad Guy turns out to be the Protagonists long-dead father? And the Protagonist made out with the Princess who turned out to be his long-lost twin sister?? That’s too contrived, even for a soap opera…

Yes, WHOever heard of the lead character of a show dying or getting a disease so one actor can leave and be replaced by a TOTALLY DIFFERENT ACTOR and yet IT ALL MAKES SENSE TO THE AUDIENCE??? Hmmmmmm?

Star Wars is not a soap opera. Most of the stuff in soap operas is ridiculous and contrived and in no way resembles real life. Compared to soap operas, Star Wars is practically a documentary.

The Doctor started out as a soap opera. They change actors all the time. McCoy got screwed. So did the second Baker. SciFi fans understand that they’re watching cartoons. Do soap fans?

“Space Opera” doesn’t derive from “Soap Opera”, but from “Horse Opera”, an old term for Westerns (both movies and TV). All three genres take their resemblance to Grand Opera from their melodramatic (and histrionic) qualities; you don’t look for depth or realism, you watch them for emotional catharsis and spectacle.
