mabrndt, there’s a difference between additive color mixing and subtractive color mixing. With red, blue, and green LIGHTS (such as TV or computer screens), you can get any color you like. With red, blue, and green PIGMENTS (such as paints), you get muddy brown.
Bailey, having yellow and white in your palette makes all the difference. Monet would argue that black is unnecessary, and he gave Renoir a hard time for using it, but I prefer Renoir anyway…

Let me rephrase: Using all three pigments, you can get a FULL RANGE of vibrant hues from muddy red-brown to muddy blue-brown to muddy green-brown.
