Actually, summer vacation is a hold-over from America’s agricultural roots. On family farms, the kids were needed to help tend crops from planting to the harvest and so many kids went absent from school during the summer that school officials simply bowed to the inevitable. There is some talk these days about making school year round. I cannot imagine the howls of protest on the part of the students should this change ever be made.
