I don’t think this will work. Kat said to Heart, “You think you’re better!” This letter doesn’t seem to address that very well. I think for Heart to show she is not better than Kat, Heart is going to have to switch roles in the play with her.

Hope it works. It’s getting close to Christmas for one thing.

I appreciate Heart addressing the issue in a straightforward manner, instead of creating some ridiculous plan to win Kat back. 6th grade Heart is definitely growing up.

It might be wise to include a bag of her favourite candy.

The question remains, would Heart write this note had she received a lesser part?

I wonder if Heart is going to back out of the play to show her support for Kat. As others said, she can’t switch with Kat, not up to her, but she might drop out.

The effort Heart is making to apologize has to account for something. Besides, after everything Heart went through just to regain interest in Dr. Seuss again, it shouldn’t be at the cost of losing one of her best friends.

I was wondering why she was writing that out longhand. But then you couldn’t deliver candy with it.

Apologies are tricky things…Once upon a time there was a jester that told the king “An apology can be worse then the original act.” The king replied “Really. Prove that to me tomorrow or I’ll have you hanged.” All night long the jester worried. The next day the king had the entire court gathered to hear the jester or see him hanged.“Your Majesty”, the jester said, “May her Majesty the Queen aid me in this?” The queen stepped down and the jester dropped a rose upon the ground. “Would my ladyship be so kind as to pick up the rose?” The queen bent over, whereupon the jester kicked her in the rear. As the entire court gasped, the jester yelled, “My lady forgive me. A thousand apologies I thought you were the King.”The king agreed he had proved his point. - But he hanged him anyway…

I’ve been a fan of HOTC for a long time and was a little concerned when Heart went from being a funny little girl to a more worldly school girl, grown up enough to audition for a school play. But Mark Tatulli has done and is doing a great job with the transition. Mark, I wonder what you would have done with Peanuts? It’s pretty much impossible to imagine what Charlie Brown and the gang would be doing and saying as they grew up.

When “Nancy” changed, my immediate reaction was negative but I gave it awhile. But I had to bail completely on it. Nancy was no longer really Nancy—she was a totally different personality. The original strip should have been retired and a 100% new strip, different name, different characters (same ages would be OK) should have launched.

So, the new year with a maturing Heart has already started—and it’s looking good so far!

We don’t know enough about Kat to understand why this even bothers her. Is she as obsessed about show tunes, musicals, and acting as Heart is? Does she even have any hobbies? Was she still in cheerleading practice when Heart just stopped going? Who knows.
