An article in today’s Washington Post revealed that Mark Tatulli is stepping down from Heart of the City and handing it over to another cartoonist, starting next week:
Next week, the St. Louis-based cartoonist Steenz is inheriting the writing and drawing of the daily strip “Heart of the City” from creator Mark Tatulli, making her one of the few African American women ever to appear on the mainstream funny pages.
Steenz, the nom de toon of Christina Stewart, won the Dwayne McDuffie Award for Diversity in Comics last year for drawing the fantasy graphic novel “Archival Quality,” which caught the eye of Shena Wolf, director of comics and acquisitions at Andrews McMeel Syndication.
Wolf was looking for a new talent after Tatulli decided to step away from “Heart of the City” after 22 years because of his full plate working on the popular strip “Lio” and such graphic novels as “Short & Skinny.” “It is my hope that Steenz will take ‘Heart’ to the next level,” Tatulli says, “and knowing her work, I believe she can.”
The way they are just reminiscing and completely aborted the Coronavirus arc should have clued me in that something’s finished. Good luck to Mark Tatulli then. I hope someday his other HOTC strips get published someday.
I am enjoying the aging of the characters ala Luann, etc., so.sigh.. I understand Mark’s decision. I saw the character artwork of the new artist. It is a drastic change of style. There’s a uniqueness to his character’s looks. At least with “Nancy” as some have said as being a lesser strip now, the characters look like classic Nancy. I enjoy the new Nancy very much. I wish Christina all the best, to take this strip to parts unknown, but boy, I’m going to miss Mark’s line work and wacky story lines. Thanks Mark for a phenomenal run!
When I used to read “Brenda Star”, I noticed a change in the drawing when the new cartoonist took over. She seemed to have a different expression on her face than the original.

I agree, I’ve never understood this either. Why don’t they end one person’s body of work and hire a new person for their own ideas and merit?

The real Kardashians shouldn’t have a TV show.

Just don’t “KILL OFF” characters like Mrs. Angellinni.

The bad news is, once Ms. Steenz takes over, Mark Tatulli’s name will disappear from the page — including atop the archived strips.
