Looks like Kat is going to need glasses. I remember when I was in elementary and middle school, the school used to have a few health based initiatives. For instance, the school used to give eye exams to screen for this issue and a lot of kids would try to memorize the eye chart to avoid the embarrassment of having to get the glasses. The middle school also had the PE teachers screen for scoliosis by making everyone stand/pose in front of 2 of the staff so that they could notice any abnormalities and recommend the kid for a more thorough evaluation, seemed very awkward to everyone at the time. Another thing I remember was the monthly fluoride treatments which were usually flavored in a strong grape or orange flavor which I remember getting several times a year in the school cafeteria. I recall a few kids brought notes from their parents and did not participate in this as not everyone believed fluoride was beneficial in mid 1970’s Tampa, heck probably still a lot of people who would refuse it for their kids today…….
My epiphany came when I was 7 and couldn’t read the words projected on the screen (what did they call those slide things back then? Slide strips or Strip slides or something).
I was tallest in my class and I made it to age 12 before anyone realized I couldn’t see anything on the board. I got by on an exceptional memory and strong focus on the teacher. The teacher realized my eyesight wasn’t very good when she noticed that i would routinely write 40 words per line in my school note book. She had to use a magnifying glass to read my homework.
