I use to ask for ID when someone would write a check and I always got a dirty look from the check writer – especially when they’d point out that all their information was printed on their check. But one day i came up with the perfect answer and pointed out that if someone stole their checkbook they’d want me to use the information on the check instead of checking their ID, and suddenly it was a matter of security against theft instead of meaningless inconvenience. No one ever complained about showing me their ID after I pointed that out.
