Just hold it under warm running water for a couple minutes and then tap the lid with the handle of a table knife, that will loosen the lid, it works for me every time.
My father taught that to open the jar, one must become the lid. If the lid still resisted the Tao, then PatLaborVI’s method will also work in a pinch.
