How is this possible? Speed and striking immovable objects. Most fatalities could be eliminated by people going 45 mph or less. We just can’t bring ourselves to do it. Self driving cars should help greatly unto someone hacks them.
Being a Trooper I can shed some light. Like David said Speed, Hitting things that don’t move, a pick up striking your Honda Civic, you know they don’t match the bumpers. Its many time not the crash that kills its the crash after the crash. You hit the belt sometimes in excess of 100g’s. Your internal organs cant take that kind of abuse. The belt only crosses one shoulder and your lap. A racing belt cover both shoulders, lap, and crotch. However when you suddenly stop your head keeps going at 60 mph till it stops. Basal skull fractures are common in accidents. It is what killed Dale Earnhardt the race driver. The car stopped and his head continued forward separating it from his spine. The reason for the Hans device. You however have no such device. I worked a fatal where the driver was wearing her seatbelt and no physical out side damage to her body at all. Her head however was laying on her chest. Her head had jerked off the top of her backbone and snapped forward breaking her neck killing her instantly. Its not car hitting car that kills….its the body going through all those forces that many times causes severe injuries. I worked one fatal where a mother was sure she could hold her child in her lap. Kid flew right through the front window. They rear ended a pick up truck stopped in front of the them. The speed was 30mph. We found the kid in the bed of the pick up truck they had hit.I have seen them all from simple to complex. I have seen one walk away from a crash that should have killed him then fell off the bridge while he was sitting on the edge…that killed him.
throw in text messaging and such..We have a no distracted driving bylaw. (not that everyone follows the law). But one day I was riding shotgun on field calls with my supervisor. We had car difficulties, got it semi-fixed and followed procedure by calling it in for the go ahead to head for the repair shop… The returned call came in while driving. My supervisor answered – realized she was on the phone while driving, did a OMG! and tossed the cell to me like a hot potato. … I was just surprised I was able to catch the darn thing.

Except for one minor detail… in that seat belts are not, in fact, bolted to the seat. They are bolted to the floor.
