captain: hey, thor! heard your movie isn't doing as well as iron man! That must be thor-oughly dissapointing! I hope it's not a thor-n in your side!! or a thor thpot for you-- krakka boom! captain: What, you're not even gonna say you're thor-ry?
OK, I know that if you’ve got Natalie Portman you’ve got to use her (and the name “Chris Hemsworth” isn’t going to sell any tickets), but is Jane Foster REALLY that central to the Thor story? Ye gods (so to speak), she had almost as much screen time as the title character.
Sure, Betty Ross and Pepper Potts and Mary Jane Watson all serve their purposes, but for the most part “girlfriend of the superhero” is a supporting role (I’d make an exception for Lois Lane; she’s key to Superman). Jenn Erica could be cast as any of them (maybe ALL of them) without anybody noticing (or caring).
When they finally get around to making “The Avengers”, do you really think Natalie Portman, Liv Tyler, Gwyneth Paltrow, and whoever they get to play Captain America’s girlfriend are going to get much screen time at all, or are going to be missed?
