100 years ago, movies were just becoming the most interesting new technology/entertainment for the average public. Now, despite the billions spent on it, it is losing its appeal and covid restrictions are just a minor reason for that decline.
Once theaters went to $4 popcorn and same for soda, installed giant screens in small spaces, and cranked the sound to 2000 dbs, we just had to quit. That was several decades ago. And just in time to miss the turn to gore, mayhem, and totally ridiculous and over-done special effects that took the place of story, plot, and serious acting.
Will Smith gave a very good come-upence to Chris Rock. The idiot insulted cruelly his wife with a very bad joke on TV in front of an audience,. It’s all recorded for the world to see.
A lover of movies, I felt bad for the winner of the Best Documentary, “Summer of Soul”. The audience was still talking about what had just happened with Smith/Rock and paying little attention to what was going on now. Hope some entertainment shows highlight the movie instead of the ’happening on stage".
The Oscars are nothing short of an overly long advertisement for movies—usually ones not on the Golden Globe’s list…so, yeah, I haven’t watched for a long time now. Besides if there are any noteworthy speeches, then they are sure to show up on U-tube or elsewhere—sans commercials.
You never went to the theaters to see the best picture nominees, unless you were going to a second-run theater. By the time they were nominated, it was too late to see them in the theater.

For one thing, that was back before you had to sell your first born child into slavery in order to afford the cost of going to a theater.

With a few exceptions, I rarely watched the favored award movies in the theater.

Oscar is 90% hype, and maybe 10% good movie.

I am not quite sure I’ve been to a movie this decade, yet. I fairly sure that I’ve been to fewer than a half dozen this century.
It’s one of those categories in Jeopardy that I just “zero out.” I’m not interested in the celebrity or escapism.

Even tho Zelenskyy did not appear at the Oscars, I understand Sean Penn has decided not to smelt his oscars, but will instead sardine or halibut them.

^ Another reason I don’t watch is because someone always must do this.

Soon the only ones watching the Academy Awards will be the members of the Academy. As it was in the beginning…

I used to go to the movies a lot a few years ago, and even then we’d get to Oscar time and I wouldn’t know ½ the nominees.
