Freshening up that winter coat of fur. I had a medium-haired cat that became a poof ball during winter then shed down in one week’s time when Spring came.
On a November night 2 years ago, I sat in freezing rain trying to get a young, homeless calico cat, who desperately wanted food, shelter, and love, to come close enough for me to grab. But she was too untrusting, no matter how much she needed the comforts of a home. But I persisted, because the forecast for the night was below-freezing temps, rain turning to ice, and death for anyone without shelter.
Eventually she came close enough to grab the treat I was offering, and I grabbed her, too, dragging her indoors despite her mindless struggle to escape. She became my Lodger, and has never been outside since, nor ever will be again, except in a carrier.
Her past is murky and was apparently deprived. She seems to have been abandoned after being taken into a shelter, processed (spaying, tatooing, and ear clipping; tests, jabs, etc), and adopted out. But then she ended up homeless again at less than a year old according to the vet, perhaps because she doesn’t know how to be a domestic cat and the adopting family got fed up with getting nothing back from her except teeth and claws. I’m working on her, but it’s uphill all the way.
The serendipitous bit is that the cat shown for November in this year’s calendar is a calico too, though with much richer coloring than my Lodger’s. Maybe it’s an omen? :-)

Winter is coming. Qat’s overcoat is clean and almost ready to wear.
