The more you’re invested in something, the more you want to see it happen. Many years ago I had a co-worker who was absolutely certain that civilization was about to collapse in the Y2K scare. He spent most of his retirement funds on freeze-dried food, a small piece of land and a trailer, and a pile of other survivalist stuff. When it didn’t come about and he had to return to work, he seemed actually disappointed that the world didn’t end.
“Actual happiness always looks pretty squalid in comparison with the over-compensations for misery. And, of course, stability isn’t nearly so spectacular as instability. And being contented has none of the glamour of a good fight against misfortune, none of the picturesqueness of a struggle with temptation, or a fatal overthrow by passion or doubt. Happiness is never grand.” —Aldous Huxley, Brave New World
Today’s comic is sort of a real downer. Kid lives in an ideal place and isn’t happy being safe and secure. Join the Army and do hazardous duty. If you survive, you’ll be happy then.
What Scoop Nisker, the news guy on the local freeform radio station in the early ‘70s used to close with was, "If you don’t like the news, go out and make some of your own.

For some reason, this strip made me think of the old “Captain Marvel” character Tawky Tawny and the story where he wants to be famous.
