The vegetables in the roadside stand looks like spectators in a stadium. Which made me think of a poem. Well, pretty much everything makes me think of some poem or other. But this being October and all, I thought this one worth citing here. It’s “Leaves” by Derek Mahon.
Call any vegetable, Call it by name. You have to call one today when you get off the train. Call any vegetable and the vegetable will respond to you— Frank Zappa
It reminds me of the episode of Pinky and the Brain where they grew the giant vegitables and made them intelligent and mobile so he could use them as an army

The prisoners of infinite choiceHave built their house
In a field below the wood
And are at peace.
It is autumn, and dead leaves
On their way to the river
Scratch like birds at the windows
Or tick on the road.
Somewhere there is an afterlife of dead leaves,
A stadium filled with infinite sighing.
Somewhere in the heaven
Of lost futures
The lives we might have lived
Have found their own fulfillment.

I know that you’ll feel better
When you send us in your letter
And tell us the name of your favorite vegetable.

How generous of Lio to allow the Condemned one last conversation with the reluctant spectators at the execution of the swift, surgical carving!
