Mental Floss (www.mentalfloss.com) has a good article about the Great Pumpkin. Apparently, the G.P. is a morality play on the number of children who are disappointed each year by Santa Claus.
Linus was a prophet ahead of his time. Only decades later did Tim Burton document the time the Pumpkin King unsuccessfully tried to take over someone else’s holiday. Disappointed but not defeated, he instead had the epiphany of bringing a little of the Christmas spirit to Halloween.
