The two cross shapes on the gable end of the house seem to be a nod to Pennsylvania Dutch hex signs, which are often used for decoration and are thought to bring good fortune, protection, and prosperity to a home. The crosses depicted here resemble the cross pattée or cross formy, a motif rarely seen in traditional hex signs, which usually feature stars, rosettes, and geometric designs. This particular cross form is more commonly associated with medieval heraldry and was used by Christian military orders like the Knights Templar and Teutonic Knights. Whether it’s a deliberate artistic choice by Dan or an unconventional take on the hex motif, it’s certainly an interesting twist.
