The deja vu is so large. My Dad hated my best friend in junior high before his family moved away. Gary’s parents fought constantly, his dad was on parole, his mom drank…a lot. My Dad was certain he was going to be a bad influence on me. And my Dad hated that he spent so much time at our house. Aside from hanging out, he slept over a lot. My dad never understood how much Gary liked being at a house where people weren’t yelling all the time. And my parents made dinner instead of leaving out a box of cereal or can of soup on the counter for dinner like his mom did. My Mom was more understanding of the situation and was in the habit of making more for dinner since Gary was probably going to be there. Before he moved away, Gary told me that he would pretend he was my brother and my house was where he actually lived.
