For those of you who weren’t around back then (or have never read comics from the 1980s), there was a major issue in Africa at the time where many people were without food and people were dying from starvation. There was a big push by many organizations in the USA and other countries to send help, food and supplies to the areas in Africa that were affected by this situation, so you saw a lot of this referred to in the comics at the time, especially around thanksgiving. Kind of like when you see cold-war stuff referred to in 1980s films/stories. It’s era specific.
