Quill: "You ok with this not-a-date?" Luann: "Sure. What's the point of being friends if we can't hang out?" Quill: "Two, please. Ta" Luann: "Quill! I should pay for my own!" Quill: "Croiky! I blew it! Now it's a DATE!" Luann: "HERE! I'M PAYING YOU BACK!" Quill: "Whew. That was close" Luann: "We gotta be more careful"

I wish that woman I used to go to the movies with as a “friend” did the same as Luann

You people are kidding, right? It’s a cartoon…. a couple of frames a day. Oh, and did I mention – it’s a cartoon!

Who pays for the popcorn?

John Abrams…you are reading a teen strip, aren’t you????

Paying for a girl doesn’t make it a date. My brother pays for me when we go to the movies and my cousin wouldn’t let me pay when we tried out an Indian restaurant. Those are definately not dates.
JoanHelen over 13 years ago
I like these two more than some of the other characters. However, I think they all represent typical teens and their relationships.

“Ta” means thank you. “Croiky” would be an Aussie pronunciation of “crikey”.
My dad is from England and my mom from Scotland. They both used “ta” and my mom said “crikey” all the time. She didn’t think it had anything to do with Jesus, or she wouldn’t have used the expression, her being Jewish. (Jews just don’t go around talking about Jesus, in any context.) It was just something everybody said all the time. If the original meaning had been cursing, it had been forgotten by the time my mom and her contemporaries (she was born in 1920) used the expression. And long forgotten by now.
Me, I’m Canadian and we don’t widely use those expressions.

“Will You two IDIOT “Love-birds” Shut the Heck up?!? Those of us who ARE on a Date are trying to ENJOY the DARN Movie!!!" – The Couple sitting directly BEHIND Luann and Quill.
Sisyphos over 13 years ago
Yes, a close one indeed! Perish the thought of a date! —But notice how in panel 4 Luann is getting touchie-feelie, with her hand on Quill’s arm in a supportive and familiar gesture such as might occur with a Couple. gasp

I’m amused by all the folks so annoyed by this pair. As the parent of two teenage boys going through these motions right now, I find it remarkably realistic, including the dancing around the idea that it’s a date. These are teens, and the teen years are awkward.
Chuck373 over 13 years ago
Don’t worry fellow readers. Tomorrow is the big finish. We get to see just where a “Not a Date” leads in Gregs head. I still think an appearance by Tiff would really bring the week to a proper end. Then we could check in on Brad and Ann and see how they are “handling” each other.
Chuck373 over 13 years ago
Better be careful Luann. Becuase if you were to let yourself go, this summer could be every thing you’ve been fantisizing about your whole life.

Why don’t they just stop playing games & admit they want to be a couple & date. All they are doing is driving themselves insane.

For all those complaining about the strip, may I offer a simple solution. DON’T READ IT! Thank you very much.
JohhnyB over 13 years ago
yo Butcherman: as usual, if you don’t agree with ALL the rainbow & lollipop comments here, you are defined as a “troll” and suggested to go elsewhere. All this even when the day’s strip is obviously ridiculous as compared to the other great work done by Greg.

This story line is a bust
mikki71 over 13 years ago
I like Quill and Luann. I enjoy all the characters. That’s why I read the comic. Not sure why some of you are so hard on the storyline, characters, etc.
my_discworld over 13 years ago
well. i think this is all kind of sweet. they’re young, they’re trying to figure out what they want and what the OTHER person wants. we’ve all been through it (and worse) so i’m enjoying this little storyline as a less depressing alternative to Brad’s job-loss/weenie-world-employment.
LEOCSUTTERIII over 13 years ago
It’s “Crikey”, actually.

Complaints raise their ugly head
With the strip, up with they are fed
Though the strip is called “Luann”, Her they do not want to see
You get the feeling they want to shout, “This should be all about me”
To read or not to read, that is indeed your choice
Then again, you have every right to raise your voice
“Cry me a river, if you don’t like it, just go away”
But everyone gathered here has a right to have their say
“If you don’t like what I write, it, you don’t have to read”
Specious arguements all, on this we can be agreed
Isn’t it rather silly, to argue forth and back
About what the comic strip may or may not lack?
So let us bury the hatchet, but not in the heads of each other
For who knows, next week may be about the brother.

i’ve always found it curious that for me at least the characters in this strip other than luann are the most interesting. i enjoy reading the strip every day but not necessarily to find out what luann is doing — this particular storyline is really lame (so far) and i can’t believe this is the way “typical” teenagers act in 2011.
wiselad over 13 years ago
well…………. tech things vary, and the activities they do at home change, and places they able to go varies, but in General……………………….. teens acts that way since the time of the Neanderthals
imbaldeagle over 13 years ago
So … What’s the intent of this strip? To depict the life and times of a teenage girl – her family – and her friends? If so, shouldn’t it be a little sophomoric at times? Shouldn’t it reveal the fun and uncertainty of young love, as well as the foibles and mistakes that accompany everyday living?
I think we, as adults, have forgotten how uncertain we felt during adolescence. We have become jaded and want every moment to challenge and titillate our emotions and expectations.
It’s NOT gonna happen. Think about it. You need dull themes to make excitement in the other story lines. A constant diet of excitement … becomes boring!
BackwardsHatWearingGuy over 13 years ago
You’re thinking of a different man from Nantucket.
imbaldeagle over 13 years ago
And one (or two) other things before I bow out for the day … To me, this week is not dull – it shows the fun and games of dating. Oh, you don’t think Quill and Luann are dating? They ARE and they know it.
AND the boring part – not the comic itself, but posts that say the same thing over, and over and over …

9thCapricorn over 13 years ago
Having raised teenagers, I think Greg is off base on this arc. This is SO middle school, not high school. HS kids don’t behave like that. This is getting so silly that I am bored with this arc. Let’s move on. Let’s go back to Brad and Ann – I am very curious about what Ann is up to.

Why is it that on a date the guy has to pay? I heard that ‘oh guys like paying’ but I like paying too! and I earn more than most guys I date.
Step-Step over 13 years ago
Don’t girls in this comic ever wear dresses or skirts?
RinaFarina over 13 years ago
Actually it did cross my mind to wonder what they would do about paying for the tickets. I’m not surprised it was a close call. And to every other commenter: if I don’t like a strip (hold your breath, here it comes), I DON’T READ IT!! SO THERE!! I read somewhere between 10 and 20. I add and drop them as it comes to mind. No, I will not bore you with the list of what I read. It’s personal; and based on today’s comments, everybody would comment on why I shouldn’t read this and should read that. @Doctor Toon, you are so right! The artist got fed up with being dissed, and now nobody can comment either on Pibgorn or on 9 Chickweed Lane. Does anyone know if there is another web site where I could go to post comments? I miss the crowd dreadfully! Usually the ratio of trolls to people was low enough that I could ignore them – however, TODAY, IN LUANN, ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!! GGGGRRRRRROOOOOWWWWWLLLLL!!!!!!!!!

I think it is cute…alas I remember teenage dating. It is always angst ridden.Bad enough with a homegrown boy/girl, but so hard with the uncertainty of an exchange student, especially from another hemisphere. They are wise to be cautious. Teen heartbreak can be so traumatic, male or female

G’day Professor, Quill is from Australia mate. Those Aussies speak a different di-lect of Inglish than Mericans, and Brits.
